How to make an invoice
- Put your name, address and tax or VAT number under From, and your client's legal name and address under Bill to.
- Give it the next number in your sequence, the issue date and a due date or payment terms.
- Add one line per piece of work with quantity and price. Pick the currency and your tax rate, and the totals add up as you type.
- Add your bank details or payment link, then download the PDF and send it.
What to put on a freelance invoice
- A unique, sequential invoice number. Never reuse one.
- The issue date and a due date, or payment terms like "14 days".
- Your name or business, address and, if you're registered, your tax or VAT number.
- The client's legal name and address, and their VAT number for business clients in the EU.
- What you did, line by line, with quantities and prices, so nobody has to ask what a total is for.
- Tax shown separately, with the rate, or a note explaining why none is charged.
- How to pay you: bank details, payment link, and the invoice number as the payment reference.

Questions
Is this invoice generator really free?
Yes. There is no account, no trial and no watermark beyond a small "Made with OIO" line at the foot of the page. You can make as many invoices as you like.
Do you store the invoices I make?
Only when you download. The form and the PDF are built in your browser, and your browser keeps a draft in its own local storage so a reload doesn't lose your work ("Start over" clears it). When you download, we ask where to send the PDF, email you a copy and keep the invoice with your email, so you can open it in OIO later. Tips and reminders only if you tick the box.
What does an invoice need to be valid?
Rules differ by country, but most tax authorities expect a unique sequential number, the issue date, your name and address, the client's name and address, a description of the work, the amounts, the tax rate and tax amount if you charge tax, and your tax or VAT number if you're registered. If you work with business clients abroad, check whether a reverse-charge note applies.
Which currencies can I use?
Any active ISO currency, the same list OIO uses for its own invoices. Pick it in the Currency field and the symbol and decimal places follow, for example no decimals for yen. For Bitcoin, Ether, Solana, USDC or USDT, use the crypto invoice generator.
How should I number my invoices?
Use one unbroken sequence and never reuse a number, for example INV-001, INV-002 or 2026-014. If you cancel an invoice, keep the number and issue a credit note rather than deleting it.
